Most lawn advice online is written for somewhere else. Hamilton sits on heavy clay with peat through the low lying parts, we get frosts into September, and the grass here is mostly cool season ryegrass and fescue. That changes what you do and, more than anything, when you do it.

Summer Lawn Care in Hamilton
Growth slows, the ground dries out and the job changes from cutting to protecting. Three things carry a Hamilton lawn through a dry January.
- Raise the height. Longer grass shades its own soil and holds moisture. This is the single biggest thing you control.
- Leave the clippings on. Once growth slows they are dry and fine, and they feed the lawn instead of smothering it.
- Water deeply or not at all. One long soak a week beats ten minutes every evening, which only keeps the roots at the surface.

Autumn Lawn Care in Hamilton
The quiet season that decides how your lawn looks next spring. Warm soil and reliable rain make autumn the best repair window of the year.
- Sow seed into the thin patches. Soil is still warm and the rain is back. Grass sown in March establishes before winter.
- Second feed of the year. It builds the root system that gets the lawn through a wet Waikato winter.
- Aerate before the ground gets waterlogged. Compacted clay is what turns into moss come June.

Winter Lawn Care in Hamilton
The lawn barely grows, but leaving it completely alone for three months is what makes September hard work.
- Keep mowing, just less often. Every two to four weeks. A lawn left completely unmown all winter comes out weak and patchy.
- Stay off saturated ground. Wet clay compacts under boots and mower wheels, and you pay for it in spring.
- Treat moss in August. Get it dealt with before the grass starts competing for the same space.
